The Kunekune (pronounced cooney-cooney, it's derived from
the Maori and means “fat and round.” ) is another breed of livestock that is very efficient and docile to raise. They are a grazing breed with minimal rooting. They align with the aberdeen angus in low input, low impact, yet high rewards.
They also make excellent pets as they are small framed, very intelligent and love attention. They are a docile and friendly animal which makes them easy to handle. KuneKune pigs can be trained much like a dog; they can be taught to go to the bathroom outside, walk on a leash and to do simple tricks.
They are a cost effective breed to raise due to their ability to primarily graze. They do not destroy your pastures as they minimally root compared to other swine breeds.
Their pork has excellent flavor. They are a lard breed that adds wonderful flavor and tenderness. A rich red meat compared to today's commercial pork. They also are a small framed breed being proper portion sized and freezer friendly.
